Select the paragraph where judgment changes action
Choose a recommendation, comparison conclusion, risk warning, or first-person account rather than annotating an entire draft mechanically. Record intended reader, decision, page purpose, author, evidence cutoff, and commercial relationship. Save the pre-edit version. The goal is to expose how the paragraph works, not to make every sentence impersonal. A passage that only introduces the topic may be low priority; a line that directs money, health, time, privacy, or commitment deserves the closest role analysis.

Apply six role labels without rewriting
Mark sourced fact, documented experience, editorial inference, proposed advice, constructed example, or unresolved uncertainty. Split sentences that perform several roles. Add evidence ID, experience record, assumption, reader consequence, and confidence. Do not label merchant copy as fact merely because it is quoted; it is a primary claim until verified. The first pass should reveal category drift. Rewriting too early often turns an unsupported conclusion into smoother language without solving its basis.

Verify every experience at the level of detail claimed
For an E sentence, record author, product or event, version, date, access, task, conditions, duration, observation, failed attempts, and material provision. Remove “we tested” when only one person saw a demo or read documentation. FTC guidance says endorsers should not describe product experience they did not have. Narrow trial experience to the trial and distinguish subjective reaction from objective performance. Do not stage a new test solely to retroactively legitimize a published anecdote; correct the prior wording first.

Turn inferences into visible reasoning
For every I sentence, write the supporting facts, rule connecting them, alternative interpretation, and evidence that would change the conclusion. Replace “therefore it is the best choice” with the reader conditions under which verified criteria favor it. Keep causal language proportional to evidence. Google’s people-first questions encourage explaining how content was created; a short method clause can make an inference legible without interrupting flow. If the reasoning cannot be stated, the conclusion may be an intuition, slogan, or commercial preference rather than publishable analysis.

Test whether a story earns its space
Ask which reader criterion, mechanism, boundary, or next action the anecdote changes. Move relevant detail next to that decision and cut biography that only builds status. GOV.UK content roles emphasize accuracy, relevance, accessibility, plain language, and user needs. A constructed coffee-shop workflow can illuminate unreliable Wi-Fi requirements; a long origin story about becoming productive may not. Preserve dignity and privacy when other people appear, and avoid universal lessons from one convenient episode.

Convert uncertainty into a bounded research task
Replace vague hedges with the missing observation, why it matters, current safe assumption, owner, and recheck event. “Support quality is unclear” becomes “public documentation lists email support, but comparable resolution time was not independently observed; readers needing same-day escalation should not rely on this recommendation.” U sentences can lead to a research queue or an exclusion. Humility is actionable when it changes the advice. It is performative when the paragraph still makes the same absolute claim after saying “in my opinion.”

Place commercial and method disclosures where weight is assigned
State payment, free access, employment, or other material connection close to the endorsement in ordinary language. Explain whether the article used documentation, product access, interviews, or specialist review. FTC guidance emphasizes clear disclosure of unexpected material connections; a profile-page statement may not help when the recommendation and link are elsewhere. Keep disclosure independent of verdict. It tells readers how to weigh the message, but the underlying claim must still be honest and supported.

Read aloud, peer-review the labels, and archive the change
After evidence repair, edit for natural cadence and author personality. Ask a second editor to label the paragraph without seeing the first pass; disagreements reveal ambiguous role signals. Publish only when material facts and experiences trace, inferences show conditions, advice stays within authority, and unknowns protect action. Record revision and recheck. This method does not force a single voice style. It prevents style from obscuring which parts of the recommendation are known, lived, reasoned, proposed, imagined, or still uncertain.
