Capture the plan before repairing it
Save the keyword list, title, outline, target reader, brief, proposed product, available sources, author, reviewer, deadline, and expected action. Mark what was chosen before research. A plan can rank poorly for many reasons, but the relevant editorial signal is whether another editor can state the reader’s decision and trace the expected answer. Freeze merchant requests and SEO additions while diagnosing. Otherwise new headings can hide, rather than solve, the absence of an evidence structure.
Evidence: Google Search Central
Branch one: no observed reader decision exists
The outline may target “people interested in productivity” without a trigger, current alternative, consequence, or desired outcome. Review user research, support themes, query context, and journey. GOV.UK says needs should come from evidence, sound like something a real user might say, and focus on a problem rather than a solution. If the only support is search volume, return to discovery. Do not invent a persona narrative to justify the selected keyword or product.

Branch two: one heading blends incompatible claims
A section such as “Why this tool is the safest and fastest choice” combines comparative performance, safety, suitability, and recommendation. Split it into propositions with product, comparator, population, condition, and outcome. Each may require different evidence and expertise. FTC substantiation principles show why objective claims need a reasonable basis matched to their meaning. If the team cannot state what would falsify the sentence, it is not ready for research or publication.

Branch three: citations were collected as decoration
Check whether sources are primary or derivative, independent or merchant-controlled, current, methodologically relevant, and actually cited by claim. A list of URLs can create the appearance of rigor while none supports the recommendation. Trace one material sentence backward. If it ends at a summary, press release, affiliate page, or adjacent study, seek the underlying evidence and assess correspondence. Record absence instead of converting source volume into confidence. SPJ emphasizes verifying information and using original sources when possible.

Branch four: the plan cannot accommodate contradiction
Look for sections dedicated only to benefits, implementation, and purchase. Search deliberately for null results, exclusion cases, alternatives, cost, failure mechanisms, and evidence limits. If contrary material has no place in the outline, the structure predetermines the answer. Add a decision branch, limitations, and conditions that would favor another option. Google’s people-first questions include whether content provides substantial value and leaves readers feeling they learned enough to achieve their goal, not whether every section reinforces one merchant.

Branch five: the outline explains but never enables action
A sequence of definition, history, benefits, tips, and conclusion can be accurate yet leave the decision unchanged. Identify the concrete output and required fields: comparison matrix, calculator, diagnostic, workflow, or checklist. Connect every section to one field. Remove background that does not change understanding or safe action. If the artifact requires missing data, the plan has found a research gap. Do not replace it with a generic takeaway or product button.

Branch six: commerce or production capacity distorted the plan
Check whether commission, sponsor input, available AI output, article-count target, or a fixed format selected the product and conclusion. Review author capability, specialist need, disclosure, and maintenance owner. Google warns against extensive automation or many topics chosen mainly for search traffic, while SPJ calls for independence and clear separation of advertising. Narrow or reject the commercial section when evidence is weaker there. A disclosure reveals incentive; it does not repair unsupported planning.

Close with a cause-specific rebuild decision
For a missing decision, return to research. For blended claims, construct the claim map. For decorative sources, set evidence standards. For absent contradiction, create choice branches. For unusable structure, design the artifact. For commercial distortion, restore editorial control or decline. Record owner, next observation, budget, and stop. This diagnostic does not promise search performance. It prevents the team from writing hundreds of polished words around a question it never defined or an answer it cannot defend.
